Subfamilia cuyos representantes se localizan principalmente en las regiones tropicales y subtropicales. Existen aproximadamente 171 géneros en todo el mundo y cerca de 3560 especies. En México 81 géneros y alrededor de 494 especies, mientras que en la región de estudio hay cerca de 45 géneros y 180 especies. En este tratamiento se incluye la descripción de la subfamilia, una clave para las tribus y las tribus Arundinelleae y Zeugiteae.
