FAMILIA ONOCLEACEAE

Familia constituida por cuatro géneros: Matteuccia Tod., Onoclea L., Onocleopsis F. Ballard y Pentarhizidium Hayata. Se distribuye en zonas templadas del este de Asia, América del norte, centro-sur de México y Guatemala.
Los helechos onocleoides han sido integrados en diversas familias entre las que se encuentran Dryopteridaceae (Kramer et al., 1990), Onocleaceae (Pichi-Sermolli, 1970), Athyriaceae (Mickel y Smith, 2004), entre otras. Estudios moleculares recientes han demostrado que se trata de un grupo monofilético bien soportado (Christenhusz et al., 2011; Gastony y Ungerer, 1997; Rothfels et al., 2012; Smith et al., 2006). Aunque la circunscripción de este grupo de helechos varía entre los autores citados, en este trabajo se sigue el concepto del “Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group” (2016).
